CONTEXTUAL FIT

An addition to an existing order is the idea of taking an existing architectural design and adding new plans without interfering with the existing model. As architects we have to be able to understand and analyze an existing model, then being able to expand on it.

The Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new addition should have its own presence.

Narrative

The famous Smith House was recently purchased by a musically inclined family. Although there are lots of spaces, they require a large family room dedicated for playing music. Previously, their house lacked the space to listen to music. The Smith House peaked their interest due to the large amounts of space and its potential for large listening parties. In addition to the family room, they prefer to spend their time in the family room, where they invite their friends and family over to have large listening parties. Although they enjoy spending time in large groups, they would like to have some private space to themselves in a master bedroom. Taking these ideas into consideration will provide the family comfort and convenience in their new home.
